"It's late January in LA, and it's cold. So cold that, in the garden at the Playboy Mansion, the girls in bikinis have goosebumps and are huddling with their backs to the patio heaters, their arms clutched into their chests. Apart from the heaters, the only way to keep warm is by dancing, and on the dance floor, an overweight young man in a bad jacket is dancing with another girl in a bikini, and one who is naked but covered in body paint. Me, I'm relying on the whiskey - which is ample - to keep my blood and social juices going. My friend John is deep in conversation with an earnest, geeky type in glasses and a woman who is entirely naked. The people I'm talking to are wearing jeans and jackets, drinking beers and occasionally shuffling to the Flo Rida being pumped out on the sound system. Every now and then somebody gets distracted by the pole dancing, or by the opportunity for a photograph with a Playmate, or by a dominatrix with a whip pushing her escort-service business cards into our hands but, mostly, we're pretty deep in conversation. I'm a newcomer to this scene, there to learn what I can, and what I'm learning is that - despite all appearances to the contrary - these guys are in trouble."
